i've removed & replaced these five or six times in different e30's. my preferred approach is to remove the motor from the transmission.

the motor is held onto the transmission by three bolt with nuts in the 7-10mm range. there is also a connection between the motor's drive shaft and the transmission's crank.

so, remove this four bolts, disconnect the motors wiring harness, THEN unbolt the transmission from its center support and the two connections for the wiper blades.

caution: some early e30 wiper transmissions MAY have a forth bolt holding the transmission to the inside of the cowl on the driver's side. i've never found this to be true though.
