Replaced the timing belt but.. no tension spring (archive)

I just replaced the timing belt and te tensioner, but while i was in there, i found that there was no tensioning spring or spring guide there for the tensioner. When i put it back together I just guessed the tension and bolted it on, it seems to run ok but... is this bad? should i probebly get a spring and put it in? (it's the tension of the blt that adjusts he timing right?)
