BMW repair/insurance costs (archive)

I'm looking into a BMW between '87 to '91. If it was well maintained, what are the average repair costs per year? Can I do a lot of te repairs myself(assuming I'm not a monkey). And, how much do most of you pay to insure them? Oh yeah, and how long will one of these last me on average? Any help is appreciated
