question about a/c...trying to save $400.00 (archive)

My car has been running a little hot while waiting at lights, it also was making a squeaky noise at the compressor. My mechanic said i needed a new air compressor ($400). He said he took a part off to make it not run so hot, but the compressor still works, air still flows, just not as cold. I recently saw a post that said all u need was a new compressor clutch? ($75). Is this true, or do i really need a new compressor.....please help!!!
