How hard is it to change a Timing Belt myself? (archive)

What special tools are needed, if any?
What other parts are needed besides the belt and tensioner? (any gaskets, etc?)
Any special tricks, tips, or gotchas to look out for?

If I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but have never done engine work before (other than changing spark plugs), is this a task that's better left to the pro's?

Local shop wants $308 to do the job. The timing belt and tensioner are available for $29 from allbmwparts.com. So obviously the job is mostly labor.
