: What special tools are needed, if any?

Just a 32mm wrench.

: What other parts are needed besides the belt and tensioner? (any gaskets, etc?)

Just collant is all.

: Any special tricks, tips, or gotchas to look out for?

Get a Bently! I can go step for step if you want, just email me!

: If I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but have never done engine work before (other than changing spark plugs), is this a task that's better left to the pro's?

I do them all the time, and only charge 100 buck for labor = should take a novice about 3-4 hours.

: Local shop wants $308 to do the job. The timing belt and tensioner are available for $29 from allbmwparts.com. So obviously the job is mostly labor.

They are ripping you off!
