Believe it or not, automatic transmission fliud,
as called for by the original specs.

When I got my used IX replacement drivetrain, the transmission had auto trans fluid in it and the transfer case had gear oil in it. Go figure.

An AAMCO guy told me that people sometimes put auto trans fluid into a stiff shifting transmission in the winter. He seemed to think that you can freely interchange the two fluid types. I stick with redline gear oil in the gears
and punkins.

My car had been run with bigger tires on the back
than on the front. It took out the tranny,
the transfer case, the front diff, and the left front axle.
