My '90 325iC has a high-frequency whirring/scraping noise coming from the rear end. It's like an electric motor or dentist's drill. At rest, there's no noise. Thereafter, the noise rises in pitch as the car speed increases. The pitch doesn't change when I change gears or even disengage the clutch.A local mechanic (seemingly well respected) says it's the pinion bearing in my differential (LSD) and estimates $560 to repair it--$200 in parts, and 9 hours labor. The car has only 50,000 miles on it--could the pinion bearing go bad so soon? And I've been told that with a bad pinion bearing, the noise occurs when accelerating but stops when you let up on the accelerator (mine doesn't stop). Any opinions?
