Anyone ever hear of Exhaust being too hot? (archive)

I was getting an inspection yesterday and and the gastket on my exhuast was burned up and had to be replaced. The guy said that my exhuast was extremley hot to work with. Anyway, he suggested that I get it checked out by someone else, but he suggested that it could be the fuel mixture or the engine timming.

Dose anyone have any suggestions?

It is an '84 318i 3-speed.
