Sounds like the batteries on the si board have died, Its a common problem with e30's. The si board has these batteries to hold the information stored for the service intervals in case the main battery is disconnected. I dont think replacement batteries are available either
wich means replacing the whole board. The board is situated behind the speedo/tacho display,if you want to check it out.
