: I have a 1989 325I, the brake lining lite came on, so i brought it in for brakes, they replaced the front brakes, but they couldn't shut of the brake lining lite, after 3 weeks, i bought it back, and they thought possible, the rear brakes need to be changes, so the then did the rear brakes, now my lite is still on, they replaced the sensor lite, but i'm having a problem with my brakes sqelling, and only periodically, could they have damaged my calibers in the repair....need advice before i end up having to take it to BMW

The Break pad wear sensors are replaceable. They cost about $10.00 each. There are two, one on the drivers side front and one on the passengers side rear. The way they work is there is a loop of wire molded into a little plug that snaps into place on the brake pad. 2 wires come off of that sensor and plug into a connector behind the disk. When you wear your breaks down really low, it actually wears right through the wire which breaks open the circuit. When this happens the light comes on. Putting in new sensors closes the circuit and the light goes off. If the wire somehow breaks behind the connector so that when you replace the sensor the break in the circuit is still present, the light will stay on no matter what you replace. This very thing happened to me. Make sure you have new sensors before you try anything drastic. I am going to live without the sensor so I soldered the wires together where they were broken and the light went out.

Sqeeling doesn't hurt anything but it is annoying. It just means they didn't put this paste (called antisqueek) on your new pads. The guy who did your brakes saved about $2.00 by doing this. If you take it back and complain they should be able to fix it pretty quickly. If it is a non BMW brake shop, they will not have the new wear sensors. You can get them at any dealer or call BAVauto (www.bavauto.com) they will know exactly what you mean over the phone and can send you the right parts so the little shop can do a professional job for you. If this doesn't work, you will know for sure it is a broken lead wire for the sensor and you can tell him to look for that too, or go to BMW for them to put a new connector on.
