Most probably the linkage that connects the stick to the gearbox is broken or the bolt/nut has dropped off.Pry the shifter cover open from inside the car and have a visual inspection.Alternatively,get down under and have a look see.Easily visible.

: He recently got one with 130k miles. The car is mechanically sound but his shifter recently broke. The stickshift is completely loose, it won't go into gear and can't drive. You can literally just move the shifter in circles. Does anyone know what could be broken?
