Rear axle nut lockplate help! (archive)

Hi all,

I've been defeated early on replacing the rear drive axle in my 85 318i. Both Haynes and Bentley advise me to "lift out" the locking plate around the big nut. Ha!

Any advice on how to get this thing out?
