I too have been defeated by this lockplate and declined my attempt to replace rear bearings. On my 86 325e there was no dust cover and it looks as though the locking plated is corroded to the point where its fused to the nut. Could I carefully drill holes into the lockplate to destroy it?

: : Hi all,

: : I've been defeated early on replacing the rear drive axle in my 85 318i. Both Haynes and Bentley advise me to "lift out" the locking plate around the big nut. Ha!
: : Any advice on how to get this thing out?
: : Thanks for any suggestions..

: The lockplate is pretty soft, so just mash it
: around a little with a screwdriver and work it out. The only thing holding it in there is how
: it crushes itself around the axle nut points,
: otherwise it's just kinda laying in there. Pry
: and punch the inside area near the flats of the
: nut and you'll be able to wiggle it free and out.
