I think these cars won't run the compressor when there's too little freon. In my 528 I disconnected a vacuum hose which now does the same hissing thing you're talking about. Check to see that there's nothing disconnected in the dash somewhere.

: My air condtioning on my 87 325 was working fair. It would take a little while to get cold but it would work. I tried the air today and it didn't work at all and I'm hearing a air leaking sound from under the dash when I hit the air button. It's a faint sound and I'm not sure if it was always there or not.

: The switch seems to be working because it still puts a slight drag on the engine when I turn it on. The only thing I did was change the radio. I thought maybe I could have knocked off a wire or somthing but I pulled the radio out and didn't see anything I could have knocked off.

: Could it have just all of a sudden ran out of freon? Any ideas what it could be?
