85 325e speedo iriadiac operation (archive)

I am driving down the road and poof, the speedo needle jumps to zero and back to the displaying the correct speed. Sometimes in the AM when I first start driving the car the speedo does not work at all then randomly begins to read the correct speed. Bad ground, sending unit? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
