After visiting Germany this summer, I have decided to replace my weekend cruiser wreck (Mini Van blew a stop sign and totalled my near mint 1971 VolvoP1800e) with a BMW 87-93 Low miles super clean 5 speed Convertible. I'm sure I will pay a premium but that's ok if reasonable(whatever that is). 1991 is my target year. I am looking for expert advice as to what problems to look for and avoid or if any years should be avoided/preferred. Looking forward to becoming a BMW owner.

Steve,

They're great cars. Normal maintenance items should be checked (last time timing belt was changed, etc.) Many folks who have power tops often post problems with them. Mine is manual and I have no problems with it. They can be a little louder inside than the sedans and if you live in a colder climate and want to drive it in the winter, look for the highly coveted hardtop to fit it.

Feel free to email me direct if you like as I've done a lot to restore mine to almost 100% (I'm at about 90% right now) so I've done a lot on it if you have any specific questions.

Mike
