Spring compressors can be had for around $40. I have been using a simple and efficient one for years and never have been endangered. It consist of 2 threaded rods with 2 clamps on each which slide via a threaded core. Just turn clock-or counter clock wise to compress the springs. Afew turns on one compressor, a few turns on the other, and you have compressed the spring equally on both sides. You could get the one that looks like a BMW jack with a clamp on top and another at the bottom. But being a BMW tool, it is very, make it VERY expensive. But strangely can be replicated for around $50 using an old BMW jack.I think that using any spring compressor is safe, as lomg as you use one...
