Check www.carfax.com or an equivalent that identifies the model by VIN. Also, you can check by the options in your car. Does it have leather interior? Power everything? Premium stereo(mirror-positioned tweeters)? Limited slip Diff? The big 87 'is spoiler? The main accessories in the 'is compared to the 'i are differential, mtech suspension, and loaded interior. Engine/tranny are identical (same as in the 525i).

Someone may just have put bottlecaps on, because when a person badges up a BMW, One of the easiest parts to change are the wheels. My 87 325is has bottlecaps on it, but I am certain it is a real 'is.
