'87 325 surges and tries to die (archive)

87 325s just after startup, if the driver does not give it gas it will die. after maybe 20-30 seconds it will usually idle, but then may die later when coming to a stop with the clutch in. Also while accelerating the driver can feel surging. Not so much like missing or cutting out, but surging. It is not every time, the car is very drivable but this occurs far too frequently. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
