I just purchased my first E30!! The car has been sitting for a long time, are the SI lights powered by batteries like the E28s??? If so can I replace them like the E28s???

yes, exactly the same. pull the instrument cluster, take out the SI board, desolder the old batts, and solder the new ones in.

Also, is there a way to identify my engine, the previous owner said that he changed the engines. I would like to make sure I have an 325is motor.

other than looking at casting #s or something like that, I'd look for the cold start injector. If it has one it's an eta motor. "i" motors don't use the cold start injector. DME Part #s would be different too.
