Is the four better, due to its more modern design with dual camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and self-adjusting valves? Does the four cylinder have distributorless ignition?

The four is distributorless, and it has a timing chain instead of a timing belt. It also has the dreaded profile gasket problem. Most cars have had them replaced by now. If not, it may fail costing you in the $1K range. I bought mine used, and the gasket had already been replaced.
