Was wondering if some of you 3-series experts had an opinion about SCCA autocross and the 3 series. My question is which 3 series is most favorably classified for SCCA Solo II? 318, 325, 238?

I ask this because I am thinking about purchasing a used E30 soley for autoX.
Thanks,
Dave

It depends on if you want to run in a
Showroom Stock class or Street Prepared Class.

I don't know what a 238 is, but the 318is and
325is are probably your best bet for D Street
Prepared and could both be front runners. The
M3 is in C Street Prepared and isn't a contender
in that class as it's up against the Miata, RX3,
and CRX-Si which are the class front runners.
And the M3's horsepower doesn't make up for it's
lack of lower-end torque which is important in
autocrossing. My DSP 325is hasn't been beaten
by a CSP E30 M3 yet :-)

As for the Stock classes, the 318is can be a
front runner in D Stock, but all the 325 cars
go into G-Stock where they'll get beat by the
Type-R, Ford Probe GT, Mazda MX6, Audi A4 and
Audi TT.
