ABS seems to work even though fault light is on (archive)

Is it possible that my ABS works even though the dash fault light is lit? Just bought my '88 325ic and the abs fault light stays on after turning the ignition. I tried slamming on the brakes many times and they don't lockup so I think the abs is working. Reading the Bentley Manual it doesn't seem like they should work if a fault is detected. Any ideas on what is wrong with the fault light and how to fix? Thanks, Kelly
