318i engine run problem ('84) (archive)

A friend has a stock '84 318i that will start every time but won't keep running. On the starting cycle it cranks and starts great, but as soon as it goes back to the "run" position the engine dies. It doesn't sputter or try to run like there's still fuel, it just dies completely. The cold start injector works, so I'm thinking its in the ignition system. Got any ideas where to start looking? What to test? Ignition switch, etc. How 'bout a fusable link of some kind, do these cars have them? I'm not very familiar with e30's.
