Gang,

A friend is considering unloading his '87 325is.

The good:

- Original owner
- About 75,000 miles
- Well maintained with records
- No accidents (or body work or paint)

The bad:

- Engine uses some oil between changes, although I'm not sure how much (no blue smoke, however)
- No rust, but some damage to left rear quarter panel from a hit and run while parked
- Usual share of door dings
- Paint is poor
- Trunk collects water in the rain, cause unknown

Right now, I'm driving my 2000 540i/6 pretty hard in track schools and autocrosses. I'm considering this 325is because it may be better suited to the driving events. I'm a newbie to this board, so I have no idea whether this car has the potential that I hope it has. What kinds of mods are available (drivetrain and suspension/tires) that would make this a killer track car while still street legal?

Also, assuming paint and body work at $2000, what is the reasonable value of the car?

I realize that some answers could be had by searching the archives, but the search engine has been down. Sorry.

Marc
