Sounds like the regulator is out off whack. I'd start there, it controls travel and the cycle of the wipers. I don't know if it is possible but it sounds like the motor/regulator was rotated 180 degrees. There is no reason that I can think of that would allow it to stop, consistently, half way through the cycle. Usually, when malfunctioning, they will either stop where ever they happen to be when you turn them off or they just keep going like my brothers is doing right now. I think the crank arm may have been tampered with. You can romove the nut and pull it off from the wipermotor assymbly then push the wipers down to the typical park position and put the crank arm back on. Check the shaft and crankarm for stripping. If no stripping the PO probably farted with it. Before testing flip your wipers up off the glass to avoid any adjustment problems. Don't want to bend a wiper arm!
Good luck

i'm new to the e30 world. have a 72 02 but just bought my first 325 yesterday (87). it has several things wrong so i'll be posting questions for the next few weeks - hope you guys are patient.
here's problem #1 - the windshield wiper park position - it is straight up. the wipers work fine but when you turn them off they park themselves vertically - not all the way up but close to vertical. no help in haynes.
anyone know how to fix this one?? is there an adjustment point somewhere that i can use to get them to park in the down position?
the po said it just started happening one day and he never bothered to get it fixed - just drove it that way when he drove the car.
any help is greatly appreciated. like i said i'm new to anything but an 02 (and this car is vastly more complicated than an 02) so i'm hoping that (with the help of this board) i can get it running and looking great. love bmw's (great engineering)
