Ever look at the wheel placement on bmw's, espicially e36's, the front wheels are damn near the front of the car but the rears are 18 or 24 inches from the back end for the same reason...

One of the reasons BMWs handle so well is the efforts its engineers make to keep front/rear weight distribution at or near 50/50 in all the company's cars. A car battery is a rather heavy component (at least 40 pounds) and installing it the trunk of a six-cylinder E30 probably accounts for a 3% (-1.5% front/+1.5% rear) improvement in this area.
