One of the reasons BMWs handle so well is the efforts its engineers make to keep front/rear weight distribution at or near 50/50 in all the company's cars. A car battery is a rather heavy component (at least 40 pounds) and installing it the trunk of a six-cylinder E30 probably accounts for a 3% (-1.5% front/+1.5% rear) improvement in this area.


Another interesting thing is that my gas tank is under the rear passenger seat and on the track the car handles a little better in right handers if the tank is FULL. I guess it offsets the driver's weight.
