As cool as the old E30s are, you might consider getting a '92 325i, just because they are the new model, the E36, there are more options if you want to fix it up too.

I'm looking at getting a '90 or '91 325i. Is the car relatively reliable? I dont want to have to invest too much money, but i definitely want a BMW. Another option i was looking into is a '95 318ti, but those are more expensive. Also maybe an older 5 series from '86 '87...? Thanks for any responses.

I highly disagree. The '92 E36 cars had WAY more trouble than E30's do. I guess it was because of all the first year glitches. Anyway, E30's are great. Take your time and find one with a maintenance history, no outstanding problems, one that's been taken care of. The 325i motor is basically bulletproof if you change the timing belt every 60k miles. The 535i engine from the E28 series is also very strong. It's got more power too. I was looking for a 535i when I found my 325iS and called it fate. There's alot of room to tweak these earlier cars because there is more that you can do yourself without having to have a $10,000 computer diagnostic system. The other option is a '95 318Ti. Though they're underpowered they're still great to drive. They feel much like an E30 in the way they drive (same rear trailing arm suspension). The interior is more updated but not too modern. I say any of the three is a good pick, just find a car that's been taken care of.
