Urgent advice needed on overheating/transmission (archive)

My recently bought 1991 316i is overheating, pouring the water out of the radiator and at the same time the engine does not change speed. The 316 has an automatic trans and the the speed stays in, I think it is the 4th, one speed.
My mecanic says the only thing he has to do is bleeding the radiator and that will solve both problems. Is he right???
Please urgent comments on this matter. Thanks.
