Transmission warning light (archive)

I just bought a 316i 1991 with automatic transmission.
When changing the speed from third to fourth the transmission seems to get out of the fourth gear and at the same time an orange warning light in the dashboard lights up.
Can someone tell me what this is and what can be done to correct this problem.
