Are you sure the fuel pump is running? You didn't mention it. I just diagnosed a similar problem with my 90 325i. The fuel pump sometimes sticks and the engine starts and runs briefly off pressure left in the fuel lines, but then it dies and won't restart. I have to smack the fuel pump to unstick it. At least I can still drive it for a couple days while I look for the best deal on a replacement...
