Help removing CONTROL ARM(s) from 89 325i (archive)

Everything started easy enough - until I tried to take off the center locking nut on both the right and left control arms. What is the trick? Those things on are so dang tight - and in a very tough spot.

Once I get the control arms off - okay, if I get the control arms off, I understand it is best to take it to a shop and have them remove the old bushings. True?

I am replacing the rotors, control arms and wheel bearings - if all goes well.

Thanks!
