Part time wipers (archive)

My windshield wipers have a very annoying and dangerous habit of working when the feel like it. I know it isn't the motor or the electrical connections to the motor. (I've checked) Do the wipers have a relay or something else I'm missing?? Is it the switch (the lever on the steering column??)

Any other hints or suggestions would be appreciated.
