I think they did change in '89 the changes weren't big at all, the only major one I can think of is the radiator, so when the motor mounts wear out it doesn't cut the radiator hoses.

I heard that the e-30 6cyl changed in 1989, what is the difference, and are there any cautions with the newer engines. I just purchased a fully documented 1990 325i auto with 80,000 miles.

i engine is the same from 87-91 and 92-93 ic.change timing belt every 4 yrs or 50 k,and adjust valves every 15k, and otherwise with normal maintanance and repairs will still be fine when you sell the car. oops-one more thing-if it has hex haed bolts, replace them with the updated torx bolts.
