fair price '91 318i? (archive)

Good morning. I'm looking at a '91 318i 4 door, 5 speed. Yea, I know most prople reco a 6 cylinder, but I like this car. Looking for my teenager. Its a one owner car, 99K miles, dealer service until warranty was out, then a good independent BMW shop in town, service records. Really good condition, original paint, vinyl interior very good. Drove it - clutch light, engine smooth, steering good, suspension tight. No rust. The head gasket was replaced a long time ago under warranty. This was a base car - no OBC, steel wheels, but does have a/c.

He's asking 6900. I offered 4500, but he said no. I think I was the first to look at it. So Im thinking about it. Maybe offer 5200 or 5300 - but I think that is about it. To go to 5-5500, I'll wait for a 6-cylinder, or look for a 88, 89, 90 model.

Thoughts on a fair price? Thanks!
