What is the plastic bos under the battery tray? (archive)

I pulled the battery tray to clean in and around and found a clear plastic box with a small tube attached.

It appears to be some kind of drain box. If so, where does the tube attach?

I have a fair amount of rust in this area, any help would be appreciated.
