Steering Rack Advice (archive)

I am looking for some repair advice for my 88 325is.

About 6 weeks ago my steering column started making squealing sounds. I took it into the local shop and they said that the rack had a slight leak and that it would need to be replaced at some point in the future. For the time being, the leak looked small and I should just keep an eye on the steering fluid level until the leak became more serious.

About 3 weeks later, I was back in the shop and they were telling me that the leak was worse than they thought, and that the rack needed to be replaced. Bottom line, a rebuilt rack and tie rods would cost bve $1,400 (including all labor).

I would like to hear from anyone else out there that has had this work done. $1400 seems high to me. Also, I am new to the Seattle area. Does anyone know a good shop in this area?

thanks for the help

Dave
