I believe what you are experiencing is play in a collapsible link in the steering column, a designed safety feature. I am told by a mechanic I trust implicitly that when it wears it becomes noisy but is only an annoyance rather than a must do. I have a 90 325i whcih was checked out thoroughly after I purchased it and I have lived with it for some 10k miles with nothing other what he said - an occasional 'clunk'.

When I go over bumps, or move my wheel quickly back and forth, I get this metal rattling sound. It is similar to that made when the steering wheel is locked. Obviously, I'm able to turn the wheel freely, but I'd like to eliminate this very annoying noise. It is an airbag equipped 1990. Has anyone encountered the same, and had any success eliminating it? Possible culprits? -Dave
