1990 325i "check Engine" light intermittent? (archive)

Dumb question. I had the light flash on two or three times before a 20 mile drive without further blinking. Checked the manual and find no reference to "check engine" light. No other warnings evident. Any ideas appreciated - i.e. what do it mean?
