'86 325es -Where's the coolant? (archive)

My coolant check light came on. Car was running fine. Temperature guage has been inoperable since I bought the car last summer. Checked coolant level. Empty. Added two gallons of 50% antifreeze. Coolant resevoir still empty. Started car. Big vibration followed by engine stopping alltogether. No fluid leaks visible. No coolant on the floor. What now? TIA
