what is this thing? (archive)

doing some work on an 87 325 that i bought about two months ago (plenty of work needed on it). had to remove the glove compartment. as i was doing it i found a small electrical receptical attached to the left side. it looks like some kind of relay goes in it. two prongs and about 1X2 inches. does anybody know what goes into this thing and what it is for?
