I have to change the timing belt on my 88 325. How long does a job like this take? And how much approx. for parts? The local BMW dealer wants around $700 for the job, which is outrageous! Is there anything I should also check/replace when I am that far into the engine? Can I change the timing belt without removing the crank pully? Thanks.
You should replace the water pump and thermostat while you're at it.

Takes me about 1 hour to complete this job. Parts are about $150 (belt, water pump, accessory belts and timing belt tensioner pulley). You do not need to remove the crank pulley, just the fan, distributor cap/wires, water pump pulley, all accessory drive belts and maybe the fan shroud if you can't fit your hands.
$700 is a rip-off, but if you don't want, or can't do the job it may be your only option unless you can find an alternate shop.
