8 gauge (sometimes people use welding cable) should be enough. It the engine block grounded? Is the ground cable to the battery good? If in doubt, replace. Also i remember some service or check light BMW placed in series rather than in parallel that wouldn't let the battery charge if it were burnt out. Check tech articles at bmw30.net.
