difference between 325 and the i, e, is, es (archive)

when i purchased this car, i thought it was an '87 325is, but according to my VIN#, i have a 325. whats the difference between the 325 and the i, e, is, es. and what does the letters stand for?
also..can anyone tell me some specs about my engine. i wanna hook my '87 325 up.
