while you're inside the door jam, it'll tell you the exact letters behind the proper #. There may be an extra 'A' there designating automatic transmission.

When you bought the car did it have the IS badge on it?

A regular 325 has an ETA motor. Which was made for the USA when we had the gas problem. It had about 121hp/145 +- torque; it was a low revving car. It was geared very high also, at about 2.93. The ETA can be a good performance engine.

If you have an "S" model, that means Sport. Sport suspension, interior,LSD (I think).

The "I" motor is a performance motor. 160+- Hp and about 130+- torque.

Hope this helps,

The "Eta" engine which was in all 325, 325e, 325eS cars had 170 torque. In '87 the 325i motor was introduced. Instead of being the torquey 2.7 liter Eta motor, the 325i was a high revving 2.5 liter engine.
"S" designated the sport package up 'til 90 or so. This included..

Recaro style seats
Limited Slip Differential
Front airdam and rear spoiler
M3 steering wheel/shift knob
BBS alloy wheels (on 325iS cars)

If you supply me with your VIN and production date (indicated inside the driver's door jam) I can tell you exactly what you've got.
