You don't need to remove the subframe to replace the bushings and you don't need the tool either. I did both sides in less than three hours using a propane torch, metal (not PVC) pipe caps, washers and threaded rods. Just be careful to use metal flashing around the gas and brake lines. There are several good pages at unofficialbmw.com.

Instead of using a torch, i cut the bottom flange
off the old bushing then i was able to pull it
down and into the PVC cap, then i pried it the
rest of the way out of the crossmember. It was
tough, but it pulled out just fine. Metal caps
would be better as my plastic ones were starting
to get stressed :-)Randy
