It can be done without removing the control arm, but it's a REAL pain in the ASS!!! You'll need two 1/2 inch threaded rods, 4 nuts and washers, two steel plates with holes drilled in the appropriate places and an air wrench. I used liquid soap as a lubricant. You will have to arrange the plates and threaded rods as a press around the "lollipop" and the front of the control arm. and use the air wrench to tighten up the threaded rods and press the bushing in place. Even if you had the control arm out, a machine shop has to be creative in installing the bushing.
Once you figure it out, it will still take a while to get it lined up properly!! Let me know if you need more specific advice. Good luck,
Chuck
Good luck
I am in the middle of replacing the control arms on the front of my '91 318is. Thing is, I can't get the new *^%^%$ing bushings on. For the love of GOD how can I do this? The mechanics at the dealer suggested that I lubricate the arms and the bushing with Turpentine and then noted that I would "be amazed at how easy they go on."
I have done that and after an hour of swearing, the only amazing thing is that I smell like a distillery and am apparently too stupid to get this task done.
Anyone have a tip?
Thanks so much.
