With 145,000+ miles, the only problem I've had has been the upper shock mounts.

I have a clunking sound in the rear part of my car (89 325I). It only does it when I hit the accelerator hard or let off of it quickly.

I'd put my money on rear upper shock mounts. You can check them with the rear of the car in the air... if the inner metal sleeve has pulled out of the rubber mount itself, you will get symptoms as you've described.

Replacements: E30 325iC mounts or the mounts from JT Design. I went through a couple sets of convertible mounts and am now on the JTD mounts.

Eric
